The journey of the shelducks

NABU project „shelduck telemetry“

Did you know that nearly all European Common Shelducks use the Wadden Sea to breed, moult, stop-over or winter? Moreover, the annual congregation of up to 200,000 moulting shelducks in a very small area during late summer is one of the most outstanding phenomena in global bird life. Please follow the journey of our “transmitter ducks” Donald, Holger, Nils and Harri on this website!

Brandgans 1

NABU (BirdLife in Germany) has equipped four male shelducks with solar-powered GPS data transmitters near the Wadden Sea of Schleswig-Holstein (Germany) in May and June 2012. NABU hopes that the results will give precious indications for the causes of the strong decline of the moulting population in the German Wadden Sea since the turn of the millennium. The scientific cooperation partner is the Research and Technology Centre Westküste of the University of Kiel.

You can follow the journey of Donald, Holger, Nils and Harri on the map. Further ongoing information can be found on our
German website.
